Properly spacing the deck joists is critical to providing adequate support for composite decking materials just as it is for lumber. Always dispose of them safely at your local recycling or waste disposal centre.Installing a durable, low-maintenance composite deck is a great way to enhance your outdoor living space. Offcuts of treated timber should never be burned as they will release toxins into the air. Make sure that you wear appropriate protective clothing, such as gloves, a face mask, or safety goggles, when cutting or sawing timber, and applying preservatives or other timber treatments. When drilling, mark out all pilot holes to ensure your fixings are as accurate as possible. When sawing, use the 90-degree guide marker on your saw, or a set square, to make accurate cuts, and sand the cut ends to remove splinters. This will ensure a hard wearing, long lasting deck. Because of the size and weight of the timbers and the frame, it’s always easier and safer if you can get somebody to help you.Īlways use structural treated timber and screws specifically designed for the job, and treat all cut surfaces with two coats of preservative. When the boards arrive, lay them on a ground sheet and keep them covered up.Īs with all decking there are a few safety measures which you will need to follow.īuilding a deck does involve a lot of moving, lifting and cutting heavy timber. You will need to acclimatise your boards on site for at least 72 hours prior to installation. The deck boards fit to the frame using specific fasteners and screws. Here are a few examples of different decking designs you can install:Ĭomposite decking is relatively easy to install if you have planned your layout accurately and have a solid timber frame as a base. You can be very flexible with composite decking layouts, but bear in mind that they may require slightly different techniques and joist positioning. This guide outlines the method for building a single level composite deck with a timber frame and horizontal deck board positioning. You also need to ensure that the necessary fall of the decking is 1:100, with the slope running away from the house. If you are going to build your decking next to a house then make sure it’s 150mm below the damp-proof course and that you don’t cover any air bricks. Try to plan your deck to fit only whole boards, to avoid having to awkwardly cut a board lengthways to fill a gap. ![]() Carefully plan your decking layout and try to limit cutting and wastage. Start by planning your deck to scale on paper and try to be as accurate as possible with measurements and expansion gaps. Important factors to think about when planning your decking include how dry and level the ground is, how much sun it will get, and how much privacy you will have. ![]() They are an increasingly popular alternative to timber decking. The boards also absorb minimal amounts of water, which means they are highly slip resistant. The boards don’t have to be sealed, stained or painted and even in direct sunlight they won't fade, warp or crack. The resulting boards last longer than traditional timber decking, and they are very low maintenance.Ĭomposite decking is very durable, and resistant to rot and damp. The event runs from 10am to 7pm on Saturday and 12pm to 5pm on Sunday. When Steve Jobs made it back to Apple, the company had dozens of products that would not survive the company’s move to a much simpler product matrix. Apple, the cupertino based tech giant, which will be unveileing the iPhone 15 line-up on September 12, is known for its groundbreaking innovations and sleek, user-friendly devices. The event is being organized by the Computer Museum of America.Įntry is free, so if you’re in the area (or willing to travel), this is a great opportunity to indulge your inner tech geek. In addition to the Newton screening, which takes place at 3pm local time on Saturday, the Vintage Computer Festival Southeast event will also feature guest speakers, vendors, demonstrations and more. On May 29, 1992, Apple demonstrates the Newton MessagePad for the first time, showing how the upcoming PDA can be used to order a pizza and pull off other time-saving tricks. And, presumably, to hear some stories which may not make it into the final film. The MessagePad 2100 was the last hurrah for Apples Newton line. He was critical of the device's weak performance, the management of the development team, and the stylus, which he disliked as it prevented the use of the fingers. Itd be almost a decade before Apple introduced the first iPhone. Apple struggled to find a new direction for the Newton, and when Steve Jobs returned to the company in 1997, he killed the product line. Apple ultimately killed the Newton at the behest of Steve Jobs, who returned to the company as interim CEO following Gil Amelios unceremonious departure. Born in 1992, it allowed notes to be written freehand, carried out calculations and provided agenda and calendar functions. But a decade before, Apple was on the same track. This timeline of Apple products is a list of all computers, phones, tablets, wearables, and other products sold by Apple Inc. Unfortunately, it’s not quite finished complete yet - so the documentary screening this weekend at the Vintage Computer Festival Southeast, in Roswell, GA, will be a work-in-progress. Nonetheless, if you can attend this is a great opportunity to have an input on how the film is shaping up. Now SSDs are used throughout Apples product line. It certainly has the opportunity to be a fascinating film, telling a story from Apple history that’s different to the usual Steve Jobs-focused narrative. The Love Notes to Newton documentary looks to be well made, and features interviews with a number of the people who worked on the project. As I’ve written before in my various “Today in Apple history” posts, the various Newton devices boasted handwriting recognition, artificial intelligence and some other smart features - although the product line got ditched soon after Jobs returned to Apple in 1996. I would recommend this printer if you need all the functions and I would always recommend HP. I bought this model because on an open auction I got it at a very good price and that was my main reason for choosing this particular model. My reservations, if any, is that HP do not provide spare parts as such so if anything goes wrong the machine has to go back to the maker rather than the supplier. My ink supplier provides alternatives to using HP branded ink cartridges which continue to be very expensive however quality is the same using a different brand. Too soon to tell but they seem to be value for money in this setup. The use of six individual print cartridges was initiall y concerning however because you can replace each color individually as they run out I suspect long term this will be cost effective. The only thing missing is the ability to print from transparency slides of which I have many. The photo printing is very good as you would expect with HP. The number of memory card slots covers all you need and the addition of a usb slot saves time. The scanner is great, as are the photo printing facilities. The copy facility is true color, the photosmart express vdu works well and can be time saving. I have yet to use the fax facility (mainly due to lack of phone connector close by) but all other facilities are proving to be great. The others have been 'borrowed' by family. I have had two others in the photosmart range and this is by far the best to date. This is a multi task machine, easy to use, good quality and the color is great.
